So…we are starting with the following:
I am a practicing Reform Jew.
In Reform Judaism we are given this permission to build our observance with accordance to individual choices that infuse the most meaning into our practice. Naturally there is a strong core:
GOD
TORAH
FAMILY/COMMUNITY
ISRAEL
[as per the 1999 Reform Statement]
…but individual approaches to daily observance vary. The idea of a choice is quite powerful but the notion behind it can be very demanding. That is because each choice has to be intentionally made at some point at least. There is no way to do that without the study of the Jewish Knowledge and Wisdom … the Torah. And really the intention behind that choice has to answer both why yes and why not. I am saying all this upfront to counter any preconceptions that some may carry in regards to what the Reform Judaism may or may not be. True practice requires in-depth study and understanding.
